The Uncommon Leadership Seminar

What matters is not the right answer but the right question.
As a leader, how do you learn to ask yourself that question?

The Challenge:
Today, leaders of organizations face demands on their time and talents that can be overwhelming.  Decision-making seems more complex.  There are plenty of "how-to" professional skills programs, but how many really address the ongoing personal growth needs of today's leaders?

The Uncommon Leadership Seminar addresses such questions as:
How do I take a firm, clear stand on an important issue, while maintaining a positive, working relationship with opponents of my stand?  Learn about the value of developing self-differentiation and non-anxious presence.
How do I spot my own over-functioning that actually undermines the development of those I lead, and keeps me feeling constantly overwhelmed?  Learn the warning signs of reciprocal functioning and how to avoid it.
How can I best respond when there is tension between two key people in the organization?  How can I stay neutral AND be helpful in the face of their frustration with each other?  Learn how to navigate emotional triangles.
What is a healthy understanding of my responsibility for the success, motivation and happiness of those I lead?  Learn to recognize and avoid emotional reactivity, emotional blackmail and functional helplessness.

"There is nothing as practical as solid theory."

The Uncommon Leadership Seminar is offered on a regular basis in a series of sharply focused, interactive small-group sessions.  See the schedule below for the next available dates and details.

Seminars can also be scheduled and offered to participants from a single organization through an in-house series.

Sample Participant Comments:
"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Uncommon Leadership Seminar as it provided me with an opportunity to be exposed to some excellent leadership theory as well as to listen to and learn from others who are currently working in a variety of leadership positions.  Frank Staropoli did an outstanding job in creating a climate of open dialogue that provided me with a great learning experience.  Frank's presentation and facilitation skills were super, and I walked away with substantive material that I could immediately apply at work."

Robert Duffy, Mayor, Rochester, NY

"This course was very helpful to me.  It gave me the opportunity to reflect on my leadership role from the vantage point of continuous improvement.  The material was relevant and very well presented, and the group dialogue was lively!  I particularly enjoyed our work on the 'non-anxious presence' of a leader."
James Ahearn, Past President, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upstate NY Chapter
"This course not only reinforces the belief that 'The only person I can change is myself' - it gives excellent practical tools for making the changes.  By focusing on the changes I can make, I'm more responsive rather than reactive, so I find I'm much less anxious and more resourceful in situations - both personal and business.  As a result, the systems around me are also changing, but not because I've willed them to!"
Mary Frances Winters, President, The Winters Group, Inc.
"The Uncommon Leadership Seminar has been invaluable to me both professionally and personally.  Frank's excellent and clear presentation of content along with the discussion with participants created an energetic and engaging environment.  As a result of my participation, I can think more clearly about my leadership in all areas of my life."
William Pickett, Former Director of Pastoral Planning, RC Diocese of Rochester
"I have learned that in order to lead others, you must first lead yourself.  The struggle to lead myself in the midst of tense or anxious or uncertain occasions motivated me to want to gain understanding for myself.  This Seminar provided understanding for key patterns that impacted my ability to lead effectively.  With better clarity I now see how to lead myself, and hence others, more effectively."
William Carpenter, Director, Office of Management and Budget, Monroe County
"After participating in Frank Staropoli's Seminar, along with other area business and government leaders, I came away with a better understanding of myself (through investigation of the family from which I came by a process Frank terms "family work") and how I communicate with others in my world.  The Bowen Theory on which Frank focused helps me pick up how those others communicate and how I can turn my conversations around to make them more effective.  I find myself using these skills every day.  I would definitely recommend that any leader or potential leader avail him or herself of Frank's training and insights."
Robert Holzhauer, MD, President, AAIR, Inc., Past President, Monroe County Medical Association
"The concepts discussed in the Uncommon Leadership Seminar have provided me with greater clarity regarding the depth to which emotions affect us as individuals, our working relationships, and ultimately the success of the organization.  The understanding I've gained helps me keep focused on my role as a leader - how I help us 'stay the course', or get off track.  The investment of time in the Seminar has already paid dividends for me."
Kathleen Martin, Associate Director of Human Resources, Rochester Institute of Technology
"Leadership is making choices.  Your program has helped me learn to make better choices and, most importantly, stick by them.  Also, communications have definitely improved in my company.  I certainly enjoyed meeting and networking with the other participants.  I thought you had a great gathering of minds."
Stephen Natapow, President, Natapow Management Group
"This was an eye-opening experience. The opportunity to interact with leaders from a variety of settings and backgrounds was a refreshing change. Time well spent!"
Dawn Tobin, President, Tobin & Associates Inc.
I've had the benefit of attending numerous types of leadership trainings and seminars.  This was truly the first that focused all of the energy on "me" as a leader.  What do I bring to the party, why do I behave the way I do, what pushes my buttons?  This was a great experience for me.  I enjoyed it very much and have already seen positive change for me in terms of managing my stress level and making positive change in my day to day life as a leader.  Thank you for this gift!
Judy Cranston, COO, Hover-Davis, Inc.
"The Seminar was helpful for me in giving me a conceptual framework to think about many leadership issues.  Some of the resultant actions are the same, others are changed by reviewing them in light of the principles we studied.  Spreading the Seminar out was very useful in giving us time to apply the theory while still learning."
Thomas Mahoney, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Rochester Individual Practice Association
"The Leadership Seminar gave me a new frame through which to view relationships on the job.  I've been amazed at how frequently I consult the seminar materials to help me think through situations and how my own behavior is influencing them!"
Carol Love, President & CEO, Planned Parenthood
"The Uncommon Leadership Seminar is a remarkable guide on a leader's journey to mastery. Through it, I gained insight into why I do what I do, and how to stop being operated by old messages so I can choose the best path in any situation. Each session brought another 'Aha' moment, as I recognized myself and my patterns in the material. Each session also offered practical alternatives to move me along this path of life and growth."
Barbara Osterman, President, Human Solutions LLC
"This program provides an opportunity to gain a more thorough understanding of what leadership truly entails. Additionally, since the theory and principles of this program apply to human behavior, the lessons learned are readily applicable and beneficial to one's personal life. Regardless of the number of leadership/management seminars you have attended, I am certain that participating in the Uncommon Leadership Seminar will be a rewarding and beneficial experience. It is an excellent program."
Ed Nowak, Public Defender, Monroe County Public Defender Office
"The Seminar in Frank Staropoli's hands is an enjoyable and impactful blend of profound developmental systems theory superbly presented. I left the course deeply satisfied that I had gained valuable insight and especially immediately applicable knowledge. A rare combination."
Robert Lewis, President, Rochester Manpower, Inc.
"Frank Staropoli goes far beyond the standard ideas and systems offered by other consultants I have experienced.  As both a leader and a participant in each of his programs, Frank provides tools to help us understand our own 'reactivity' and its effects on our organizations.  He is willing to ask the tough (and usually annoying) questions we need to hear, but he also accepts the same type of questioning for himself.  The results are dynamic sessions where concepts are not merely presented, but used as a tool to discuss our role in issues that exist in our organizations, our lives and even in the session itself.  I have participated in a number of programs Frank has offered.  Although most leaders today have experienced numerous training and consulting programs, I never heard a participant say 'Been there, done that!'  Frank's programs have been unique, challenging and helpful."
Frank Payne, President and CEO, Capital Business Advisory Group, Inc.
"Bowen's theory is a useful framework that is easily applied in the real world - work and home.  Learning with other leaders is a great way to process information and get past your individual filter - to really understand how you get in the way of being the leader that you want to be."
Cynthia Zagieboylo, Executive Director of Field Operations, National M.S. Society
"I think the greatest compliment a coach can get is inspiring self-discovery.  The Uncommon Leadership Seminar has inspired me to want to discover more about how Bowen theory can help in my personal and professional development."
Thomas Brady, President, The XLR8 Team
"The Uncommon Leadership Seminar was a remarkable experience.  It has allowed me to honestly and deliberately peel back the layers of my thought processes.  I know that I am a more thoughtful and effective leader because of the many insights that I was able to gain into my emotional programming."
Jeffrey Natapow, Vice President, The Natapow Management Group
"Thank you for a very enlightening seminar.  Whenever I get involved with training of any kind, I typically try to come away with at least one "pearl".  I came away with several this time.  Thanks for a job well done. "
Richard Jobe, Manager of Human Resources, Marshall Farms Group, Inc.
"This Seminar gives you a truly uniqe opportunity to speak cnadidly with other leaders about how you lead your organization.  I learned a lot from the other participants, and I valued their constructive feedback on items I shared about myself."
Mark Cronin, Vice President, Rochester Individual Practice Association, Inc.
"I found the instruction and materials relevant and insightful.  Great opportunity to discuss matters with other Rochester business leaders not part of my organization."
Frank Lamas, Associate VP, Student Affairs, RIT
"The Uncommon Leadership Seminar helped me gain a broader understanding of the  human dimension behind every business transaction."
Jennifer Leonard, Executive Director, Rochester Area Community Foundation, Inc.
"This Seminar got me thinking about things in a different way.  It gave me principles and strategies that I could apply immediately to many everyday leadership situations, so my decisions became more crisp and clear and on target."
Nancy Adams, Executive Director, Monroe County Medical Society
